NoFap is everywhere. The subreddit has over a million subscribers. YouTube is full of "Day 90" transformation videos. The core idea (abstain from masturbation and porn to reclaim your life) speaks to a real feeling that something is off.
The gooning community has a complicated relationship with NoFap. Some gooners came from NoFap. Others treat it as the opposition. Most have mixed feelings because NoFap gets some things genuinely right and other things spectacularly wrong.
What NoFap Gets Right
NoFap exists for a reason. The feeling that you've lost control of your porn consumption is real. The flat, hollow sensation after hours of scrolling is real. The desire for more discipline and focus is real.
NoFap correctly identifies that mindless consumption is unsatisfying. A person who watches porn for four hours, hates it, and does it again the next day has a pattern worth examining. The boredom scrolling, the genre escalation, the feeling of needing more stimulation just to feel the same thing. These are real patterns that deserve attention.
NoFap also correctly identifies that willpower alone isn't the answer. Their philosophy is built around community support, counter tracking, and identity change ("I'm not a person who does this"). Those mechanisms work for some people.
What NoFap Gets Wrong
The pseudoscience is the biggest problem. NoFap culture is full of claims that semen retention increases testosterone, gives you a deeper voice, improves your skin, attracts women magnetically, and unlocks superhuman focus.
None of this is supported by evidence. Testosterone levels aren't meaningfully affected by masturbation frequency. The "glow" people report after 30 days of abstinence is the placebo effect combined with the natural confidence of accomplishing a difficult goal. The magnetic attraction to women is just someone standing up straighter because they feel proud of themselves.
The superhero framing does real harm. It sets people up for disappointment when Day 90 arrives and they still have the same social anxiety, the same insecurities, the same life they had before. Then they feel like they failed, when the problem was never their masturbation frequency.
NoFap also frames all masturbation as the enemy. This is its deepest blind spot. The target should be mindless consumption, not pleasure itself. When you treat all stroking as a relapse, you're condemning one of the most basic human pleasures as a moral failure. It's shame in a different package.
Where Gooning Differs
Gooning and NoFap are philosophically opposed on one crucial question: is extended pleasure the problem or the solution?
NoFap says the problem is too much pleasure. The answer is abstinence.
Gooning says the problem is too little intentional pleasure. The answer is deeper, more structured practice.
This is the core insight that NoFap misses. The reason people lose hours to porn isn't that they enjoy it too much. It's that they're not enjoying it enough. They're chasing a feeling they can't quite reach because they're consuming instead of experiencing.
Gooning demands that you slow down, pay attention, and engage with the moment. It's the opposite of mindless scrolling. A gooning session requires preparation, focus, and body awareness. You can't goon on autopilot. The practice itself teaches the discipline that NoFap tries to impose from the outside.
What the Community Actually Knows
Gooners who have been at this for years consistently report something that NoFap never accounts for: discipline and pleasure are not opposites. The same people who can edge for six hours without cumming tend to have better control in other areas of their lives. The self-regulation you develop by refusing the orgasm transfers.
This is the opposite of the NoFap model, where you spend 90 days fighting an urge and hoping the resistance makes you stronger. In gooning, you spend hours in the presence of the urge, not fighting it, not giving in, just breathing and feeling and choosing to stay where you are. That's a much more useful skill than avoidance.
The Middle Path
Some of the best advice from the gooning community actually borrows from NoFap's insights. The "porn cleanse" (taking a few days off from content to reset your sensitivity) is a tool that both communities use. The recognition that excessive consumption can dull your response is common ground.
The difference is what you do after the reset. NoFap says keep going. Gooning says come back fresh and go deeper.
If NoFap works for you, it works. But if the abstinence model leaves you frustrated, ashamed, and stuck in a cycle of relapse and restart, consider the alternative. The problem probably isn't that you like pleasure too much. It's that you haven't found a way to enjoy it that feels sustainable.
Gooning is that way.
Gooning is a hobby, not a problem
